The $20 Billion FIFA Plan
Crisis
On July 28, 2026, news broke that FIFA was exploring the possibility of selling off an ownership stake in a new commercial subsidiary called Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE) to private equity investors. FFE would handle the commercial operations and rights of many FIFA tournaments including the world cup. The next day, the plan was officially confirmed by FIFA. It was quickly met with an overwhelming wave of backlash from the football world, namely by Uefa, the governing body of football in Europe. UEFA accused FIFA of “attempting to sell the soul of football” and declared an emergency meeting of the body’s member nations to plan its response.
In this committee, delegates will take the place of various key Uefa member nations at the emergency meeting on July 30th, 2026. Delegates will discuss how exactly to respond to FIFA’s proposal, whether to continue opposing the proposal or open up to it, and how to go about doing either. Delegates should consider the interests of Europe as a whole while also forwarding their personal interests. Considerations might include how the proposal might benefit or disadvantage certain nations financially, how taking either side might affect countries’s sporting goals across national and club football, and how the proposal or opposition to it might affect the balance of power in the football and political worlds. Delegates will be expected to balance concerns over the integrity of the sport with the potential financial benefits of the proposal, and balance the benefits of either option with the institutional and public backlash that will inevitably follow.
