General Assembly SOCHUM: Sudanese Civil War

GA

Starting in 2023, there has been an ongoing civil war in Sudan and, consequently, a humanitarian crisis for the local people. The conflict is between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are engaged in a power struggle for control of the country and its resources. Due to this conflict, millions have been displaced, infrastructure has been destroyed, and there have been accusations of genocide in regions and cities, such as Darfur. Unfortunately, there have been somewhere between 13-14 million displaced people since 2023 and more than 21 million Sudanese people are currently facing food insecurity.

Humanitarian aid convoys have been facing obstructions in vital cities and restrictions through limited funding. Furthermore, agriculture has been widely disrupted due to the conflict as well as other key industries and institutions, leading to increasingly dire conditions for the Sudanese people. Several international resolutions and measures have been enacted, or have been attempted to be enacted, to help protect civilians and mediate the crisis, but have failed for several reasons. These measures include sanctions, embargos, the deployment of peacekeepers, and two resolutions that the UNSC has adopted on this matter.

However, these measures have seen poor implementation and little tangible outcomes because of a lack of public attention and little enforcement in practice in Sudan. This committee will focus on addressing the civilians caught in the conflict and working to draft solutions and new strategies to facilitate the distribution of necessary supplies to Sudan through international means.
