The World Health Organization:
Kidney Transplants
In the World Health Organization (WHO), we will examine disparities that exist within the treatment and transplantation access surrounding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Unfortunately, it must be noted that CKD affects 9.1% of the global population and results in 1.2 million deaths annually. While over 5 million people require transplantation annually, only 100,000 kidney transplants are performed, and access is hindered largely a result of inequities that put vulnerable populations more at risk. These inequities include limited government support, dependence on private-for-profit institutions, and resource shortages---as seen by the sole 314 transplants performed in Africa in 2022. Thus, the committee will focus on addressing these barriers and health disparities that restrict access to organ transplants worldwide.
